Auger, Cardinals Shine in Another Road Win

As Seth Auger goes, so do the Staples-Motley Cardinals.
The sophomore wing canned six 3-pointers en route to a career-best 22 points to spark the Cardinals to a 60-58 victory over the Tigers of Pine River-Backus Saturday afternoon.
When Auger scores in double figures this season, Staples-Motley is 6-2.
Anything less, the Cardinals are 0-13.
It wasn’t just Auger who was dialed in.
As a team, the Cardinals drained a season-best 12 3s. Anything less, and Staples-Motley would have lost to a Tigers (7-14) team that kept the game within a possession or two for the duration.
Nathan Holm and Beau Howard gave the Redbirds defense all it could handle, with 30 and 19 points, respectively.
But it was Auger who proved to be the biggest nuisance of all.
Staples-Motley has picked up its offensive play of late, scoring 60 points or better in four straight games after averaging fewer than 50 for the first 17.
The win also gives the team its second winning streak of the season and consecutive road wins on back-to-back nights since victories over Little Falls and Park Rapids Jan. 29-30, 2010.
It improves the team’s road record to 3-8, following a 1-8 start.
Brian Huber scored 13 for Staples-Motley and Kyle Jansson added nine.
Up next: Verndale (6-13) Thursday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.
