Crosby-Ironton Continues Dominance of Cardinals

Different day returns same the result.

Caleb Baker led the way in this one with 20, as the Rangers wrapped up Mid-State Conference play 6-4.
Staples-Motley (7-18) finished the conference slate 3-7.
The Cardinals played tighter basketball this go-round (C-I defeated S-M 72-41 on Feb. 3).
In the end, they could not stop all of Crosby-Ironton’s moving parts and fell to the Rangers for the 13th time in 14 tries.
Michael Hoge contributed 15 points in the Rangers’ 15th victory of the season.
Seth Auger led Staples-Motley with 13.

Cardinals Soar Into Postseason Red-Hot

The Staples-Motley Cardinals are going to need others to step up from here on out after top scorer Jasmine McGillvray suffered a knee injury just more than a week ago.
A team effort is what coach Arden Beachy got.
For more than one half of play, Staples-Motley played even basketball against Class A Nevis (17-9).
The Cardinals turned the corner early in the second frame, spurring an easy 76-49 win Thursday night in a final tune-up before Sections.
Jaelin Beachy notched 14 points, a total McGillvray averaged per game before the injury, to lead Staples-Motley.
Three others scored in double figures as the Cardinals wrapped up the regular season on a seven game winning streak to finish 21-4.
Megan Norby amassed 14 points in defeat.

Senior Avery Jackson chipped in 10 points for the Wolverines, who will play their regular season finale tomorrow night in Pequot Lakes.

Staples-Motley Drops Non-Conference Tilt to Nevis

Nevis (11-13) ended a four-game losing streak by defeating Staples-Motley 52-45 in Staples, Minn., Thursday night.
Taylor Chase put his stamp on another opponent this season, outdueling Kyle Jansson and leading all scorers with 24.
Jansson continued his strong play for Staples-Motley (7-17), compiling 19 points.
Nevis used strong defense in the first half, limiting S-M to a season-worst 13 points, in building a 12-point lead.
The Cardinals' offense recovered in the second stanza behind Jansson's play, but could not come up with the big plays down the stretch.

Two more games, two more victories.
After shedding Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 60-39 Monday night, the Cardinals were again up to their winning ways Tuesday night in Pillager, mushing the Huskies 85-20.
The victory extends Staples-Motley’s winning streak to six and its overall record to 20-4.
On the other end, chalk up another loss for Pillager, which has endured a season to forget just a year removed from a 17-11 2010-11. The Huskies end the regular season winless, at 0-24.
Kelly Pearson paced S-M with 16 points, one of 12 players to score.

Fast Start, Detroit Lakes Prove Too Much for Cardinals

Basketball is a game of runs.
A night after stealing 21 straight points from the Verndale Pirates en route to a commanding 77-54 win — the team’s third consecutive — Detroit Lakes used several runs to build a 31-point lead over Staples-Motley Friday, before settling for a 78-66 Mid-State Conference win.
The Lakers clinched the conference title with the victory and pushed their mark there to 9-0 with one game to play.
Last season Detroit Lakes shared the honor with Pequot Lakes, which is 8-2 this year.
Staples-Motley falls to 3-6 within the Mid-State and 7-16 overall.
Joe Mollberg, the soon-to-be quarterback at the University of North Dakota, led three Lakers in double-figures with 21. Kirk McLeod and Rick Hutchinson contributed 14 and 15.
The Cardinals lost for the first time in 11 days despite a season-best 27 points from junior Kyle Jansson and another double-digit performance from sophomore Seth Auger (10).

Staples-Motley Finishes Conference Play Victorious

The Staples-Motley Cardinals overcame a halftime deficit to wrap up its Mid-State Conference schedule 9-1 with a 65-57 victory over Detroit Lakes Tuesday night.
After trailing by as many as eight points in the first half, Jasmine McGillvray took over.
The junior poured in 27, following a 25 point performance, and drained four of the team’s nine 3-pointers.
Kayli Muckenhirn, who struggled the last time these teams played with just eight points, scored 18 for the 12-10 Lakers.
The Cardinals (17-4) won the Mid-State Conference with its victory last Thursday night over Pequot Lakes, the first time the team has done so in more than eight years.
S-M will now look to continue its strong play as it prepares for sections.
If the Cardinals win out, they will tie their regular season victory total of 21 from 2009-10.
Jaelin Beachy and Kelly Pearson also produced double-digit efforts for Staples-Motley, with 13 and 10, respectively.
Up next: Duluth East (16-4) Friday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.

Auger, Cardinals Shine in Another Road Win

As Seth Auger goes, so do the Staples-Motley Cardinals.
The sophomore wing canned six 3-pointers en route to a career-best 22 points to spark the Cardinals to a 60-58 victory over the Tigers of Pine River-Backus Saturday afternoon.
When Auger scores in double figures this season, Staples-Motley is 6-2.
Anything less, the Cardinals are 0-13.
It wasn’t just Auger who was dialed in.
As a team, the Cardinals drained a season-best 12 3s. Anything less, and Staples-Motley would have lost to a Tigers (7-14) team that kept the game within a possession or two for the duration.
Nathan Holm and Beau Howard gave the Redbirds defense all it could handle, with 30 and 19 points, respectively.
But it was Auger who proved to be the biggest nuisance of all.
Staples-Motley has picked up its offensive play of late, scoring 60 points or better in four straight games after averaging fewer than 50 for the first 17.
The win also gives the team its second winning streak of the season and consecutive road wins on back-to-back nights since victories over Little Falls and Park Rapids Jan. 29-30, 2010.
It improves the team’s road record to 3-8, following a 1-8 start.
Brian Huber scored 13 for Staples-Motley and Kyle Jansson added nine.
Up next: Verndale (6-13) Thursday, Feb. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.

Full-Strength Cardinals Down Braves

The Staples-Motley Cardinals are back at full strength.
It showed Friday night in Staples, Minn., as the home team soared to a 65-33 win over Menahga (10-10, 5-5 Park Region).
Top scorer Jasmine McGillvray returned from a two game hiatus to net a year-best 25 points off of the Cardinals bench. The junior forward averages about 13 points per game.
S-M forced 32 Braves turnovers in the team’s best defensive effort since a 100-31 win over Park Rapids Jan. 19.
With the win, the Cardinals up their record to 16-4 overall, one win shy of the 17 recorded last year, with five games to play.
Up next: At Detroit Lakes (12-9) Tuesday, Feb. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.

Lady Cardinals Complete Season Sweep of Pequot Lakes

There’s the offense Staples-Motley Cardinals fans have come to expect.

The lady Redbirds scored a 74-68 victory over Pequot Lakes Thursday night to complete the season sweep.

After producing a season-low 30 points in a loss to Crosby-Ironton a week ago, Staples-Motley scored 36 by halftime in its eighth victory in nine tries within the Mid-State Conference.

MiKayla Wing tallied a season-best 23 points to pace a Cardinals offense that averages 69 points per game.

Mattie Lueck and her 28 points and Kayla Miller’s 20 kept the Patriots close throughout the game, but Wing’s performance and 26 made free throws (in 40 attempts) were enough to lift Staples-Motley to 15-4 overall.

S-M also won the first tilt 78-52 back on Jan. 3 to end a four game losing streak in Pequot Lakes.

Up next: Menahga (10-9) Friday, Feb. 10. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30.

Behlianno's Athlete of the Week: Feb. 9

The KSKK/KVKK Behlianno’s Athlete of the week for February 9 is Jermiah Harper, of the New York Mills wrestling team.
The freshman won last weekend’s Park Region Conference Tournament at 106 pounds, defeating Osakis’ Trenton Coyer in a major decision.
Harper was one of 12 Eagles to place and among six to make it to the final.
The victory extends Harper’s winning streak to 12 and ups his record to 23-3.
Harper credits his success to a focused mind and direction from his father.
"Before a match I like to be alone for five or 10 minutes just so I can think in my head about what I need to do to win,” said Harper, whose favorite subjects in school are math and history.
The third-place finisher in the NYWA State Tournament a year ago, a moment Harper says was his best, is constantly taking mental notes of his opponents’ techniques.
That’s how Harper figures he was able to defeat Coyer so easily.
"I've beat this kid before, so I knew how he wrestled,” Harper said. “Most of it was memory of how he wrestled before and what he's going to do.”
New York Mills wrestling coach Eric Niemi is glad to have a wrestler of Harper’s ability.
“He’s one of the guys who just gets a little bit better every time he goes out on the mat,” Niemi said.
As successful as Harper has been, he wasn’t the Eagles’ representative at 106 pounds to start the season.
After the Eagles began 2011-12 0-3 in duals, though, Niemi inserted Harper into the leadoff role — 106 pounds grapples first in duals.
Immediately, Harper made a difference.
New York Mills is 13-2 since.
“He provides a big advantage (for us) when the duals begin,” Niemi said.
Harper embraces being the team’s table-setter.
"I feel like if I win the first match for the team it gets everyone else pumped up," Harper said. “It’s a good feeling.”
The journey to Park Region Tournament title began in kindergarten, when Harper’s father, who wrestled through high school, first introduced the sport to his son.
What keeps Harper coming back to the mat is the preparation.
"[It’s] all the hard work that you have to do just to wrestle for six minutes,” said Harper, who also Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestles in Perham after the high school season is over. “All the time you put in just for the little bit of the time on the mat."
Harper and the Eagles will begin sections next week, where the team finished 8-0 during the regular season.
Harper likes his team’s chances to make it to state and believes an individual appearance is possibly on the horizon.
“Our best wrestling is yet to come,” Niemi said.

Pelican Rapids Whips Cardinals

If the score was 0-0 at halftime, Staples-Motley would have won.
Alas, the Pelican Rapids Vikings so thoroughly dominated the first half — 47-19 — that the Cardinals could have scored 60 in the final frame and it wouldn’t have mattered.
The Vikings (16-3) showed fans in attendance why Minnesota Basketball News pre-ranked them No. 1 in Class 2A to start the season, winning 90-63 Saturday night.
Now ranked No. 4, Pelican Rapids lost leading scorer Luke Halbakken for the game early to an ankle injury.
The team didn’t miss a beat.
Ryan Bruggeman led a potent Vikings attack with 24 points. Taylor Budke added a season-high 20. In all, five players scored at least nine points.
The victory ends S-M’s three game home winning streak and gives the Vikings’ nine straight wins.
The issue at hand again for Staples-Motley (4-14) was soft defense beyond the arc and inconsistent offensive play.
Against tougher teams, Staples-Motley struggles to find a rhythm.
After scoring just 19 points in the first half, the team came to life with 44 in the second (PR scored 43).
Dennis Vasquez showed flashes of brilliance, contributing a season-best 15 points. Jordan Wick was his stable self in providing a lift off the bench with eight. Since seeing more minutes beginning two weeks ago, Wick is averaging 7.6 points per game.
While the injury to Halbakken didn’t deter Pelican Rapids from winning for the first time in Staples since Jan. 7, 2006, it could hurt the team’s quest to win the Heart O’Lakes Conference and gain the top seed in Section 8AA should he miss a significant amount of time.
The Vikings are neck-and-neck with defending Class 2A champ Perham.
Up next: Pequot Lakes (9-9) Monday, Feb. 6. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.

Balance Wins: Rangers Best Cardinals Again

Staples-Motley’s road woes continue.
The Cardinals, without leading scorer Kyle Jansson, looked lax in losing for the eighth time in nine tries away from Staples-Motley High School, 72-41 to Crosby-Ironton Friday night.
Staples-Motley (4-13, 3-4 Mid-State Conference) had another uneven performance, allowing 48 points by halftime to trail by 25.
Last week the team allowed a season-worst 52 first-half points in an 83-41 loss to Section 6AA foe Pierz.
Crosby-Ironton outplayed the Cardinals in just about every facet of the game.
Freshman Daniel Hudrlik did a little bit of everything for the Rangers (12-7, 5-3), scoring 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting, hauling in 11 rebounds, blocking shots and getting into the S-M passing lanes.
Where the Cardinals were anxious offensively, rushing passes and caving under the Crosby-Ironton pressure half-court trap defense, the Rangers were meticulous and patient.
The Goodwin brothers — Will and Jacob — combined for six 3s. All five of the C-I starters scored at least eight points.
Grant Longbella paced the Cardinals, who have now lost 12 of the last 13 to Crosby-Ironton, with 10. Brian Huber added eight.
Up next: Pelican Rapids (15-3) Saturday, Feb. 4.

CROSBY-IRONTON — 72
Will Goodwin 16, Daniel Hudrlik 14, Caleb Baker 10, Michael Hoge 10, Jacob Goodwin 8, Jordaan Reynolds 7, Garrett Van Horn 7

Lady Cardinals Stymied, Stunned by Rangers

Maybe the Mayan calendar was supposed to end 2/2/12, not 12/21/12.
Crosby-Ironton (11-7) stunned No. 8 Staples-Motley 46-30 Thursday night in a Mid-State Conference matchup.
Shannon Lundgren scored 11 points and Chelsey Bonsante contributed 10 for the lady Rangers who became just the fourth team to defeat the Cardinals in 18 tries.
None of the previous three victors so thoroughly thwarted S-M the way C-I did.
The Cardinals’ 30 points were a season low for a team that averages nearly 70 points per game.
What’s more, Staples-Motley defeated this very same Rangers team 73-31 earlier in the season.
Leading scorer Jasmine McGillvray was held scoreless, as the team shot a miserable 23 percent from the floor, including 5-of-32 from beyond the arc.
The loss blemishes S-M’s previously perfect 7-0 record in conference play.
Up next: Pequot Lakes (10-8) Thursday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15.

CROSBY-IRONTON — 46
Shannon Lundgren 11, Chelsey Bonsante 10, Abby Gindorff 10, Missy Foote 8, Sienna Miller 3, Lauren Peterson 2, Meredith Silgen 2

STAPLES-MOTLEY — 30
